Can you be cured of HIV?
Unfortunately, we have to answer this question with ‘no’. At the time of writing, it is not yet possible to be cured of HIV. Fortunately, HIV can be treated well, we will tell you more about this later. However, there is continuous research into a possible cure for HIV, because many people worldwide still die from the consequences of HIV.
What HIV treatments are there?
Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to be cured of HIV. However, there are various treatments that suppress the HIV infection. If you take HIV medication, you can live a good life with HIV. For example, life expectancy is currently comparable to that of people without HIV. If you have been diagnosed with HIV, it is important to start HIV treatment as soon as possible. On the one hand, this prevents you from infecting other people and, on the other hand, the infection cannot further affect your immune system. HIV treatment is done with a so-called combination therapy, which in most cases is a combination of 3 different HIV inhibitors.
What HIV medication is there?
There are different types of HIV medication on the market. The combination of HIV inhibitors you receive depends on your age, weight, CD-4 cell count and symptoms. You always discuss the appropriate HIV medication with a doctor. What is the same for everyone is that you have to take the HIV inhibitors every day, for the rest of your life. Compliance with therapy is very important for HIV, this is the extent to which a patient carries out the treatment as agreed. If you take the HIV inhibitors incorrectly or forget, it is possible that the virus becomes resistant to the combination.
